KSI Knowledge Sharing Session: Commercialisation of Research Results & Patent Implementation

On 19 January 2017, KSI held a seminar on ‘Commercialisation of Research Results and Patent Application’. The speakers were Dr Terri Lomax, RTI International’s^[1] Vice President for Discovery Science Technology, and Dr Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, the Head of the Innovation Centre at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). The event was organised to respond to the lack of commercialisation of patents by Indonesian researchers.

The two speakers presented their experiences in developing research results through patents, technology transfer and commercialisation with industry. There were around 40 participants, including senior representatives of the Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education (Kemristekdikti) and heads of agencies for research and community service (LPPM) from various universities. They were eager to learn more about how to engage and partner with industry and governments.

A lack of information and links to partners and governments are commonly faced by universities in regions. To address this, the speaker encouraged researchers to learn how to become ‘techno-preneurs’. Researchers need to have a team to connect with and receive funding from industry, and to overcome complexities in some of the Indonesian regulations around patents. National agencies can support regional universities and local governments to organise innovation technology fairs and invite companies to make university-industry connections.
