Athena SWAN: Opportunities and Challenges for Gender Equality in Indonesia’s Higher Education Sector

Speaker: Veronica Taylor - Australia National University (ANU) College of Asia and the Pacific

Host: Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa - DIrector for Research and Community Services, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education Indonesia

Athena SWAN is a charter that recognises gender equity and gender equality as basic principles in advancing participation rate of research and higher education for all. Originally established in the United Kingdom and created to advance and tackle the obstacles of woman's career in STEM disciplines, nowadays Athena SWAN including the non-STEM disciplines and more broadly addressing gender equality to ensure the proportional participation rate and well distributed good practices. Towards the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) program, Athena SWAN as an accreditation framework for gender equity issues has been adopted by 40 universities, research institutes, and government science organisations in Australia. With the example of that good practice, it becomes more interesting of how it's reflection in Indonesia's higher education and research sector in relations with the effort to mitigate opportunity disparity with gender-based.
