"Making research inclusive: Listening to the voices of people with disability"

with

Dr Dina Afrianty
Research Fellow, La Trobe University

hosted by

Slamet Thohari, M.A.
Secretary, Center for Disability Studies and Services, Universitas Brawijaya

Good data is a critical building block for inclusive social policy. But in Indonesia, comprehensive data on the barriers people with disability face is limited and their perspectives are often neglected. While several government agencies have made an effort to improve their data collection, some disability advocates have criticised this data as not reflecting the lived experiences of persons with disabilities or the social barriers to inclusion. Outside government, researchers in Indonesian universities and research organisations have begun to develop disability studies as a new area of research. But many researchers struggle to apply inclusive research approaches to their research.

In this KSIxChange, Dr Dina Afrianty will discuss her experiences of inclusive research and provide examples of methodologies and approaches to help ensure that policy research reflects the views and concerns of people with disabilities.
