This year, Linggarjati made history again. The Linggarjati Museum, on the site where negotiations between the Republic of Indonesia and the Netherlands to end colonial rule and the use of force took place 70 years ago, was chosen as the venue for the declaration of Indonesia’s Alliance for Research Excellence on the 10th of September 2016. This newly established alliance of sixteen research institutes marks an important step in organizing collective action among research institutes to address systemic problems that constrain the production of high quality research, access to and availability of data, and the ability to effectively influence policy making.
“Until recently, we did not have a standard for what constitutes research excellence. We hope that with this initial collective action, the members of the coalition will be able to jointly facilitate a mechanism for research quality assurance, strengthen each other’s competitive advantages, and establish synergized efforts to improve the quality of networks with government, international agencies and philanthropic organizations,” said a representative of the coalition.
Since 2014, Australia has been supporting, through the Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI), sixteen research institutions in their efforts to improve research quality, organizational development, and policy engagement.
Linggarjati’s association with the spirit of intellectual rigour, symbolizing the importance of negotiations that place a premium on dialogue and intellectual exchange, made it the ideal choice as the venue for the formal commencement of the research partners’ Coalition for Research Excellence. It is hoped that it will inspire a joint commitment by research institutes to collaboratively address the systemic barriers to a healthy knowledge sector in Indonesia.
