Researchers in Indonesian universities are being encouraged to incorporate gender and social inclusion perspectives in their applications for government research grants following the launch of the 12th edition of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education’s Grant Guidelines for Research and Community Engagement on March 20
In collaboration with the Australian National University (ANU) and Kemenristekdikti, KSI conducted two knowledge sharing sessions on Gender Equity in Research and Higher Education at the Hotel Luwansa, Jakarta, on 1 February 2017, and in UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, on 3 February 2017. These events were covered positively by national media, including the Jakarta Post, Suara Pembaharuan, Tribunnews, jpnn.com and jawapos.com.
KSI Program Officer, Mirisa Hasfaria, had the chance to interview Azriana, the Head of the National Commission on Violence against Women 2015–2019, to discuss her changed role, from activist to the head of the Commission, and her views on how the Commission uses data and evidence to influence the policy-making process, and how to integrate gender perspectives into research for policy.
During December, KSI organised three large events with different audiences highlighting the role of women in research and public policy: a knowledge sharing event on 7 December on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in Research for Development, a talk show on 21 December on Women in Public Policy, and an expert discussion on 22 December on Gender Research in Universities.
Commemorating Mother’s Day, on 21 December 2016, in cooperation with the National Institute of Public Administration (LAN) and the Indonesian Association of Policy Analysts (AAKI), KSI organised a talk show on ‘The Role of Women in Public Policy in Indonesia’ along with the inauguration of new board members to the AAKI.
"A better understanding of what gender issues entail is the first step that Government agencies must take, otherwise it is not possible for them to create appropriate plans and activities to address gender issues and overcome problems related to them."
Strengthening gender and social inclusion in research and higher education will improve the quality of research and analysis. The program design of KSI seeks to mainstream gender into its overall work by integrating gender analysis into the production and use of research by the public sector, policy research institutes and civil society organisations.
