The Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI) held a workshop and partners’ meeting in Linggarjati/Kuningan, West Java, from 8-10 September 2016. KSI’s 16 partner policy research institutes attended the meeting which was addressed by Professor SangkotMarzuki, the President of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI). He discussed experiences and lessons learned in heading an institution widely recognised as leading in research excellence. Also at the workshop was the Head of the Centre for Policy Analysis (PAK) of Bappenas, DrIrYahyaRachmana Hidayat, M.Sc.

This meeting was held as part of efforts to support research institute partners to establish an agreement on a collective platform and action agenda to address systemic problems hindering the production of high quality research and limiting capacity to effectively influence public policy-making processes.

At the end of the Linggarjati meeting, leaders from the 16 partner policy research institutes declared an ‘Alliance for Research Excellence’. Although current alliance membership is limited to KSI partners, in future it is expected that the Alliance will include more research institutes across Indonesia. As it develops, the Alliance, which is aimed at quality research, will become financially independent and grow as a research institute network that provides quality assurance, codes of ethics, peer learning, and capacity support in policy research. It will ultimately contribute to inclusive knowledge-based economic development.
