Shaping Disability Inclusive Development in Indonesia

In an effort to support public policy formulation to accelerate disability-inclusive development in Indonesia, the SMERU Research Institute, with support from KSI, is conducting a preliminary desk study entitled, ‘Barriers to Disability-Inclusive Development in Indonesia’. It is expected to give an initial picture of the current conditions and progress of efforts to shape disability-inclusive development, to provide feedback to policy makers and to lay a foundation for further research. 

As part of this study, on 26 May 2017 in Jakarta, SMERU held a focus group discussion to explore the perspectives of various stakeholders with respect to disability-inclusive development. Representatives of government institutions, academia and non-governmental organisations attended the discussion.
Three resource people presented on government policy, conditions for people with disability and lessons learned from fostering disability-inclusive development. Dr Ade Rustama M.P. from the Coordinating Ministry of Human Development and Cultural Affairs gave a presentation on ‘The Indonesian Government’s Policies and Programs on Disability-Inclusive Development’. Prof Irwanto from the Centre on Child Protection and Wellbeing (Puskapa) presented on ‘The Conditions of People with Disability in Indonesia’, and Joni Yuliyanto from Sasana Integrasi dan Advokasi Difabel (Centre on the Integration and Advocacy for People with Disability) presented on ‘Experiences Facilitating Disability-Inclusive Development in Yogyakarta’.

The results of this discussion are expected to provide early feedback to the study, especially on identifying barriers to shaping disability-inclusive development. They will also assist in prioritising strategy formulation.
