Managing and Empowering the Demand and Use of Evidence

On her trip to the Doing Development Differently Workshop, in Jakarta, KSI is fortunate to have Louise Shaxson/ODI to share her thoughts on the challenges, opportunities and lessons to demand and use evidence.

Louise Shaxson is the writer of a number of working papers which captures lessons from various government pilots related to demand and use of evidence. A number of working papers that she has published with KSI and ODI focus on specific experiences on building and managing and evidence base for policy. These working papers include:

  • Lessons for Building and Managing an Evidence Base for Policy (download)
  • Annual Report Cards: one way for government organisations to synthesise and present complex evidence for policy making (download)
  • Investing in Evidence: Lessons from the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (download)
  • Understanding the organisational context for evidence-informed policy-making (download)
  • Guidelines and good practices for evidence-informed policy-making in a government department (download)

Louise Shaxson (profile)

Louise Shaxson is a research fellow in the RAPID programme. She has worked as a natural resource economist in Africa and Latin America, as a research manager in DFID’s London headquarters, and as a policy adviser and management consultant in the UK and internationally.  This breadth of experience has shaped her insights into the flow of evidence between research, policy and civil society in different countries.   She is particularly interested in how to embed an evidence informed approach inside a government department and to help evidence-informed decision making become part of business as usual.  She has published widely on evidence-related issues.  Louise was an impact assessor for the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework, and is an Associate Editor of the journal Evidence & Policy.
